We encourage hospitals and other health care facilities to enroll in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) first national surveillance system to monitor adverse events in patients receiving blood transfusions. The CDC will summarize this national data to better understand how to prevent adverse transfusion events, such as reactions to blood products, medical errors and process problems.
The confidential Hemovigilance Module is part of the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). This Internet-based surveillance system, tracks and analyzes health care-associated infection data, allowing the CDC, hospitals and other health care facilities to optimize prevention efforts. The Hemovigilance Module was developed by the CDC in collaboration with AABB (formerly known as American Association of Blood Banks).
The CDC provides the module at no cost, including free training and ongoing user support. View enrollment requirements.
