HIPAA 5010 and provider identifier dual-use

Asuris is preparing to be fully compliant with the federally mandated Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) 5010 guidelines by the compliance date of December 31, 2011. The X12 Version of HIPAA 5010 replaces Version 4010A1 currently used to electronically report and inquire about health care services.

The HIPAA 5010 format accepts only the National Provider Identifier (NPI) for electronic claims submission in addition to your tax identification number.

If you are currently submitting both your NPI and your Asuris provider number, please begin to submit your NPI only. This will assist your office in moving toward the HIPAA 5010 format. If your NPI is not listed on your American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 835 Remittance Advice, please contact your provider consultant to inform them of your NPI.
