Restricting disclosure of patient protected information

As of February 17, patients have the right to restrict disclosure of his or her protected information for payment or health operations purposes, unless the disclosure is required by law, according to a new HIPAA requirement.

Providers must agree to this request for restriction, as long as the individual has paid for the health care services or materials in full. In these situations, when requested by the patient, a claim would not be sent to the health plan for payment.
