ICD-10 Update

The International Classification of Disease (ICD)-10 project at Asuris is currently in the requirements and design phase. We will share more information as it becomes available.

Note: We recognize there is a possibility of a delay to the ICD-10 implementation date by the Department of Health and Human Services. We are closely tracking this discussion and will relay any changes as they become available. Until a final decision is reached, we will continue conveying the October 1, 2013 implementation date in our communications.

What is ICD-10?
ICD codes are procedure and diagnosis coding of diseases and signs, symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances and external causes of injury or diseases, as classified by the World Health Organization (WHO).

On October 1, 2013, medical coding in U.S. health care settings will change from ICD-9 to ICD-10. The transition will require business and system changes throughout the health care industry. Everyone who is covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) must use the new format.

When is ICD-10 effective?
Claims submitted with dates of service or inpatient discharge on or after October 1, 2013 must be in the ICD-10 format.

What transactions are impacted by ICD-10?
ICD-10 codes must be used on all professional and facility HIPAA transactions for dates of service or inpatient discharge on or after October 1, 2013.

Will this impact Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), Current Dental Terminology (CDT) procedural coding or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM IV) diagnosis coding ?
No, you will continue to use valid CPT, HCPCS, CDT and DSM IV codes as you do today.

Where can I find implementation resources to assist with the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 codes?
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed implementation handbooks with templates to assist providers with the transition. They can be found on the CMS website. These handbooks can be used as a reference whether you are in the midst of the transition or just beginning the process. There are handbooks designed specifically for:

• Small hospitals
• Large provider practices
• Small to medium provider practices
