Medicare Advantage and Part D Special Election Period extended
The Special Enrollment Period (SEP) has been extended for some Medicare clients. Individuals who were disenrolled from a Medicare Advantage (MA) or Part D plan (PDP) on Dec. 31, 2010, due to a plan non-renewal or service area reduction and who haven't yet selected Part D coverage, now have until Feb. 28, 2011, to obtain Part D coverage. Those who have already used the non-renewal SEP to enroll in a Part D plan may not use this extension to make a new election.
A Feb. 7 memorandum from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) extended the SEP from Jan. 31 to Feb. 28. In late January, CMS sent a notice about the new deadline to those affected by non-renewal, but the extension applies to those affected by area reduction as well.
