06/04/2010   See updated FAQ about dependent coverage provision

In April we notified you that we'll implement the dependent coverage provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) early for currently covered dependents who are on a parent's Individual or fully insured group plan. We're accelerating the implementation to prevent gaps in coverage for our young adult members.

We've updated our FAQ to answer questions from employers about the provision and how we're implementing the changes.

New topics added to our FAQ:

What about new groups that enroll in an Asuris plan after June 1 and prior to the law taking effect?
  • All dependents initially enrolled on a new group plan between June 1 and the date on which the new law takes effect will be subject to the policy's eligibility guidelines. Dependents who would lose coverage due to marriage or age between the new plan's effective date and when the law takes effect won't be dropped from coverage.
What if my dependent(s) who are currently covered by my policy age out prior to June 1?
  • If you recently received correspondence from us that indicated your dependent is no longer eligible for coverage after May 31, 2010, due to age, please let us know if you want to do any of the following:
    1. If your dependent child has already been set up on his or her own Asuris Individual policy, and if you want to add him or her back to your policy
    2. If your dependent child has already been terminated from your family policy and you want to add him or her back to your policy
    3. If you no longer want to keep your dependent child on your plan
Will there be a special open enrollment period for dependents who are currently under the age of 26?
  • Yes, 30 days before the annual renewal date of each policy.
Will these coverage changes also be extended for dental products?
  • Dental-only plans will not be extended the dependent age extension at this time because dental-only plans are not subject to this federal reform.
What if my dependent already opted off of my policy and was accepted for COBRA coverage prior to May?
  • Dependents who enrolled under COBRA prior to May are no longer eligible for coverage under their parents' plan.
We'll keep you updated about additional implementation details on this rule and the other more immediate reforms as they become available.

An implementation timetable and further reference sources are available on the Kaiser Family Foundation site.
