09/08/2009   Fuhrman, Cass named to local nonprofit boards

At Asuris Northwest Health, we are actively involved in our communities. Supporting the communities in which we live and work is important to us, and that support can come in many ways, including serving on boards of directors.

Shannon Fuhrman, of Individual and Medicare Sales, was recently named to the board of directors of Senior Services, a nonprofit agency serving older adults and their loved ones in Washington. Senior Services, which was established in 1967, promotes positive aging for thousands of seniors and their families each year through its integrated system of quality programs and senior centers. More than 3,000 volunteers, together with 250 employees, make the work possible and efficient.

With vastly improved longevity and health in recent decades, the United States is becoming more mature. Senior Services expects to lead its community into a future where its older residents can remain healthy and productive longer. The organization is committed to providing a much-needed helping hand to family caregivers, many of whom care for aging parents and children simultaneously.

Brady Cass, director of Eastern Washington operations for Asuris and its parent company, was recently elected to officer positions on two boards in the Spokane region: The American Red Cross Inland Northwest Chapter and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Inland Northwest Branch.

The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, nearly a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest U.S. supplier of blood and blood products. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 (juvenile diabetes) research worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes—a disease that strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin-dependent for life and carries the constant threat of devastating complications—JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in 2008. In a typical year, 85% of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and education about research
