CHIPRA goes into effect Oct. 15
The Federal Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 (CHIPRA) goes into effect Oct. 15, 2009. This law extends and expands the Children's Health Insurance Program and provides special enrollment rights to group health plan participants and beneficiaries.
In response to the law, we will permit eligible employees of a group who are not enrolled for coverage to enroll for coverage prior to the next anniversary date of the group's coverage (within 60 days) under either of the following circumstances:
- If the subscriber or dependent's Medicaid or CHIP coverage is terminated as a result of loss of eligibility for those programs
- If the subscriber or dependent becomes eligible for a premium-assistance subsidy under Medicaid or CHIP
This change applies to all small- and large-group medical plans, including ASO.
