There are ways to save money on cholesterol medications
Effective May 1, Vytorin® will be covered at the non–preferred, or most expensive, copay level. We
wanted to let you know about this change and give our members information about other safe and effective medications that can
save them money.
In the past three years, several safe and effective medications for high cholesterol have become available, including
generics. All statins work in the same way to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, but using a generic or a preferred medication can
save members money. We are sending members a letter today that will encourage them to discuss with their doctor various alternative medications.
Members can also visit RegenceRX to learn
facts about statins medications and cholesterol.
Simvastatin (Zocor®) is the best value for lowering high cholesterol, as it can provide up to 52% LDL
cholesterol–lowering. Crestor® is the least expensive when higher cholesterol–lowering is needed
and generic options are not enough. It can provide greater than 52% LDL cholesterol–lowering. Members may still choose
to remain on Vytorin, but they will incur higher out–of–pocket costs as a result beginning May 1.
