The Regence Foundation addresses gaps in palliative care
Too often, our fragmented health system falls short in supporting seriously ill and terminally ill patients and their families. The final phase in the lives of people with advanced illnesses can be the most medically invasive of any in their health care experience. Suffering, pain and despair are more prevalent then they should be.
Last April our parent company launched The Regence Foundation, dedicated to transforming health care in the United States. Unfortunately, the end of an individual's life is frequently a better example of health care tyranny than health care at its best. The Regence Foundation aims to address this misalignment with the introduction of Sojourns, its signature program for improving the care and quality of life for terminally ill patients. One element of Sojournsthe Sojourns Pathway Programgets underway this month when The Regence Foundation invites hospitals in our area to apply for grants to support planning, implementation and innovation in end-of-life programs. While quality end-of-life and palliative care is getting more focus nationally, there is still a gap in many communities.
The Sojourns Pathway Program is an example of changing the way people think about health care in the United States, promoting programs that place the dignity, comfort and autonomy of patients above the wants, needs and convenience of the health care industry.
