Move It gets lawmakers moving and schools winning
We have teamed up again with Washington legislative representatives for Move It, our annual walking challenge program. The program was developed to bring an awareness and action to the growing problem of obesity in America while adding a little friendly competition into the overall conversation about health.
The six-week program requires participants (Washington state legislators) to wear an Asuris pedometer and record their weekly steps. Each participant's goal is to have the most recorded steps by the end of the six weeks. We recognize the top walkers by awarding money to schools in their districts.
In this year's program, six state legislators—three representing eastern Washington and three representing western Washington—earned a combined total of $10,500.
The following Eastern Washington legislators were awarded the following donations:
- In honor of Sen. Marr's (D-Spokane) first-place finish, we awarded $3,500 to Adams Elementary in Spokane. The school will use the money toward a climbing wall.
- In honor of Rep. Ahern's (R-Spokane) participation, we awarded $1,000 to Westview Elementary in Spokane in the 2008 Move it Walking Challenge. The school will use the money for health-related projects.
- In honor of Sen. Delvin's (R-Richland) participation, we awarded $1,000 to Jefferson Elementary in Richland. The school will use the money toward playground improvements.
