Statin options offer value, results
We moved Lipitor® from our preferred tier (T2) to our non-preferred tier (T3) in January 2006. Out of consideration for those members who were already taking Lipitor at that time, we allowed them to continue receiving this medication at the preferred (T2) level.
Members who have paid the lower copay for the past several years may choose to remain on Lipitor. However, starting Oct. 8, they will incur higher out-of-pocket costs as a result. We are mailing a letter to impacted members soon.
In the past three years, several safe, effective statin medications—including generics—have become widely available. These medications still lower LDL (bad) cholesterol effectively and, in some cases, may cost less than a current copay for Lipitor.
All statins work in the same way to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, but using a generic or a preferred medication can save our members and plan sponsors money. The following options are available at a preferred or generic copay. We encourage our members to talk with their doctors about which one of these options might be right for them.
What is the bottom line?
- Lovastatin (Mevacor®) is a good value for moderate cholesterol lowering (21 to 31 %).
- Pravastatin (Pravachol®) is a good value for moderate cholesterol lowering (21 to 31 %).
- Simvastatin (Zocor®) is the best value for high cholesterol lowering (<40 %).
- Crestor® is the least expensive when the greatest cholesterol reducing(>40%) is needed. Vytorin® is another option for reducing cholesterol >40%.
As always, our goal is to ensure that our members receive medications that offer the best value. We value all of our membership and look forward to continuing to serve their health care needs.
