03/09/2007   Generics First-Statin Program

Over the last few days, you may have seen coverage in the Seattle Times, Seattle PI or on KIRO TV regarding Lipitor® and the use of generics first in step therapy.

When new drugs become available (both generic and brand) we do extensive research to determine if they are an effective alternative to other medications.

In the case of Lipitor, ongoing research and analysis show that three generics (simvastatin, pravastatin and lovastatin) provided the best options when moderate cholesterol-lowering was needed..

Statins are medications used to reduce "bad cholesterol," or LDL-C. In more than 70% of cases, people needing statin therapy can be effectively treated with lower-cost generics. Among high-potency statins, Crestor® and Vytorin® provide the best value for lowering LDL-C by more than 40%.

The prices of generics range from about $11 to $23 for a month’s supply. On the other hand, brand names range between about $85 up to the $92 cost of Lipitor.

Step therapy* promotes the use of medications that are safe and effective for treating high cholesterol and other conditions, such as heartburn, at a fraction of the cost. When reading about step therapy, it’s important to keep in mind the following points:

  • It’s not unusual for treatment guidelines to suggest that drug ‘A’ be used before drug ‘B.’
  • We are asking that folks new to this type of treatment, or those who haven’t been on cholesterol-lowering medications in a period of time, try one of the generics first.
  • This policy will not impact our members who currently take any of the brand-name medications.

*Step therapy is the use of a comparable alternative medication for a period of time before another medication is used; it applies to both generic and brand-name medications.
